Eastern Pondhawk, female

A female Eastern Pondhawk on a blade of grass in the August border, bright green where the male is powder blue. Pondhawks are dragonflies of still water and the vegetation around it across the eastern United States, and the female hunts from low perches in the grass rather than over the pond.

Eastern Pondhawks are unusually aggressive for a dragonfly of this size, known to take prey close to their own body length, including other dragonflies and damselflies - which makes the delicate look somewhat misleading.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
