Julia butterfly
Carlsbad, 7 March 2026

A Julia in the butterfly house, a longwing of the American tropics that reaches Florida and Texas, where it flies fast through sunny clearings and along forest edges rather than in the shade its relatives prefer.
Long, narrow wings and an unbroken orange field with only a black leading edge - one of the plainer Heliconians to look at, but among the fastest fliers in the family. In the Amazon it has been photographed drinking the tears of turtles and caimans for the salt.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
