Autumn Leaf butterfly
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, 7 February 2026

Two Autumn Leaf butterflies side by side on a leaf in the butterfly house at Fairchild, wings part-open. It is a butterfly of the forests of South and Southeast Asia and northern Australia, resting among dead leaves on the forest floor where the underside makes it vanish.
The wings are showing the rusty orange upperside with its scatter of white spots and dark forewing tips. The name comes from the underside, hidden here: brown with a dark line for the midrib and a pointed forewing tip, the shape and colour of a dead leaf. Fairly confident as an identification on the general look, though a couple of close relatives share the pattern and I can't rule them out from this angle.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
