Pink Lady's Slipper
Mohonk, 29 May 2022

A native orchid, and one that does not transplant. It depends on a specific soil fungus to germinate at all, so a plant dug up and moved almost always dies. The only way to have one in a garden is to already have the right fungus in the ground.
The pouch is the whole strategy. A bee forces its way in through the slit at the front, finds the exit blocked, and has to squeeze out past the pollen-bearing anthers near the top - which is also the only way out, so most visits end in the bee leaving loaded.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
