A meadow katydid in the grass stems of an Upstate meadow in August, which is exactly where it lives, and it gave itself away by staying still. Meadow katydids are insects of damp grassland across the eastern United States, and they sing from the grass through the whole of late summer.
Told from a true grasshopper by the thread-like antennae, often longer than the entire body; a grasshopper's are always short and stout. Most meadow katydids sing at frequencies near the top of human hearing, part of why they are heard far more often than seen.
