Birds

Thrushes

Medium-sized songbirds that hop across lawns and sing from high perches, and the family includes the two robins: the American one, which is a true thrush, and the European one, which is not, but is still listed with its old relations. Several are the finest singers in the woods.

The Hermit Thrush's song, the one you hear in the northern woods at dusk, uses the same mathematical intervals as human music. It sings in overtones, picking notes from a single harmonic series the way a bugle does, which is part of why it sounds to us like a tune rather than a noise.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
