Birds

Starlings

Sociable, noisy, glossy birds, quick to take advantage of people, and in Africa spectacularly coloured. The European Starling is the one everyone knows, and every one in North America descends from birds released in Central Park in the 1890s.

A starling's bill works the other way round from most birds'. The jaw muscles are built for opening, not closing, so the bird can push its closed bill into turf and then force it open to make a hole, which is why a lawn full of starlings walks forward stabbing at the ground.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
