Owls
Hunters of the night, for the most part, with soft-edged feathers that make their flight silent and forward-facing eyes so large they cannot move in their sockets, which is why an owl turns its whole head. When one roosts in a city park in daylight, word gets round, and a crowd forms under the tree within the hour.
In many owls the ears are not level. One opening sits higher on the skull than the other, so a sound reaches them a fraction apart, and the bird uses the difference to place its prey in the vertical as well as the horizontal. An owl can take a mouse under snow it cannot see, by hearing alone.
