Kingfishers
Found across most of the world, but North America has only one, the Belted Kingfisher, a big, rattling bird with a crest that hunts by hovering over water and dropping in head-first.
It nests underground. The pair dig a tunnel a metre or two into a river bank, with the chamber at the end sloping upward so that it stays dry. The female is one of the few birds more colourful than the male, with a rust-coloured band across her chest that he lacks.
