Jays & crows
The corvids, which are the cleverest birds there are, by any test anyone has devised. Jays are the colourful, woodland end of the family; crows and ravens the black, open-country end, and a raven's calls run to dozens of distinct sounds.
Jays plant oak woods. A single Eurasian Jay buries several thousand acorns each autumn, one at a time, and remembers most of them; the ones it forgets become trees. After the last ice age it was jays, not the wind, that carried the oak north across Europe as fast as it went.
