Cranes
Tall birds of open country, and among the oldest bird families still flying: fossils recognisably crane-shaped go back tens of millions of years. They dance, in pairs and in groups, with leaps and bows that have been borrowed by human dances on three continents.
The crowned cranes of Africa are the only cranes that roost in trees. They kept a long hind toe that the other cranes lost, and it lets them grip a branch, which for a bird that stands over a metre tall on the open savannah is a useful place to spend the night.
