Cardinals & tanagers
Bright birds with heavy bills: the cardinals, the buntings and the tanagers of the eastern woods all belong to the same family, whatever their names suggest. The cardinal stays all year; the others pass through in May, when a scarlet or indigo bird in a green tree is the surest way to stop a walk.
The Indigo Bunting migrates at night and steers by the stars. Birds raised in a planetarium under a rearranged sky learned the wrong one, and set off in the wrong direction when the real sky was shown to them, which is how the experiment proved it.
