A Wren in full song at Stodmarsh, tail cocked, the whole body shaking with it. The wren is the commonest breeding bird in Britain, found in every hedge, wood and reedbed in the country, and it sings from cover with a volume out of all proportion to its size.
A wren's song can reach volumes close to those of birds many times its mass, thanks to a disproportionately powerful pair of vocal muscles. The cocked tail is close to constant and one of the easiest ways to pick a wren out at any distance before its song gives it away. The male builds several nests and the female chooses one.
