Watching the dhows

Two men in the shade of a mangrove at the water's edge, looking out at the boats rather than talking. The boats are dhows, the lateen-rigged sailing craft of the Indian Ocean, and until living memory they were how everything reached Lamu: the monsoon blows from the north-east from November to March and from the south-west for the rest of the year, and the trade with Arabia and India ran out on one wind and home on the other.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
