Volcanic desert, Teide

Weathered lava outcrops rising out of pale volcanic sand, each one skirted by a single tough shrub and nothing else.
Las Cañadas, the huge caldera around Teide's base, sits high and dry enough that only a handful of specially adapted plants manage it, most of them found nowhere else in the world. The red bugloss that flowers here in May stands two metres tall and grows on no other mountain on earth.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
