Vines above Monthelie
Burgundy and the surrounding area · 9 May 2019

Early May, so the vines are only weeks into leaf - last year's growth still bare and gnarled at the base, this year's shoots the pale new green climbing the wires. The yellow spirals on some of the young canes are protective sleeves against frost and rabbits.
Burgundy's whole classification system is built on ground exactly like this: which side of a slope, how much stone in the soil, how the water drains. Two rows a few metres apart can legally be different appellations.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
