Upstream at Iwasuge Falls

A slow shutter turning the current to mist over a streambed of moss-cushioned boulders, in the forest above the falls. This is beech country - Japanese beech, buna, the tree of the snowy side of Honshu - and the moss is the measure of it: Nagano's hills get some of the heaviest snowfall of any inhabited place on earth, and a summer stream here is running on the last of the winter.
