The walls of the Moorish Castle

Castelo dos Mouros, built by Sintra's Moorish rulers in the eighth or ninth century and taken by the Christians in 1147. The walls now run bare along the ridge with nothing inside them, having lost whatever they once enclosed long before anyone thought to preserve the rest.
The view down over the town and the plain beyond is the reason the site was chosen in the first place. From here a lookout could see ships on the Atlantic and anyone coming up the road from Lisbon.
