White conglomerate rather than granite, which is what gives the Shawangunk ridge its pale cliffs and the near-vertical faces climbers come here for. The rock is quartz pebbles cemented into a matrix laid down as an ancient river delta and later tilted up with the rest of the ridge.
Early April, so the hardwoods below are still bare and the pines holding the cliff top read as the only green for miles. A second summit shows behind, on the same ridgeline running north.
