The Scrovegni Chapel
Padua · 27 August 2023

The whole room. Three tiers of narrative running round the walls - the lives of Joachim and Anna, then the Virgin, then Christ - under a barrel vault painted as a night sky.
The bottom register is the surprise. Below the stories, at eye level, Giotto painted the Virtues and Vices in grey monochrome, made to look like carved stone panels. They are not sculpture and were never meant to fool anyone for long; they are a painter demonstrating that paint can do sculpture's job. You get fifteen minutes inside, after a spell in a sealed antechamber that pulls the humidity out of your clothes.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
