The Scrovegni Chapel

Giotto painted the entire interior between about 1303 and 1305, and it is usually treated as the hinge on which Western painting turns: the point at which figures stop being symbols arranged on a surface and start occupying real space, with weight, and with faces that are doing something. The blue is lapis lazuli, ground and laid on over dry plaster rather than worked into it wet, which is why it has flaked in places where the rest has not.
The west wall is the Last Judgement. Enrico Scrovegni is in it, kneeling, presenting the chapel, which he built partly to atone for his father's career as a moneylender. Dante had already put the father in Hell.
