The Russian Bridge, Postojna Cave

The bridge crossing the chamber is genuinely called that. It was built in 1916 by Russian prisoners of war put to work on the cave during the First World War, some of whom died doing it, and it is still the route the walking tour uses today.
Postojna is toured partly by train: over three kilometres of it run on rails cut in the 1870s, among the oldest cave railways anywhere, though this chamber is seen on foot. The formations date back half a million years or more, one drop of saturated water and one thin trace of mineral at a time.
