The ridge, evening light
Slovenian Alps · 1 September 2023

Evening light on a limestone ridge in the Julian Alps, the rock pale and fractured rather than the darker crystalline stone of the western Alps. The difference is origin: this range was sea floor, laid down as coral and shell in a warm shallow ocean and folded up when Africa pushed into Europe. Water has been dissolving it ever since, which is why the peaks here are so sharp-edged and so full of caves.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
