The crane is not an intrusion. It has been part of the building for fifty years. The current restoration works by taking the temple apart and putting it back, partly to undo an early twentieth-century repair that pinned the marble with iron: the iron rusted, swelled, and split the stone from the inside.
Almost no line in it is straight. The columns swell slightly at the middle and lean inwards, and the platform is very gently domed - corrections made so that a rigid building reads as upright to the eye rather than sagging.
