The notch

New Hampshire · 12 October 2019

The notch

A glacial trough. The U-shaped profile is the giveaway, cut by ice rather than by the river now running in the bottom of it.

The colour is doing something specific. The reds are red and sugar maple, the yellows are birch and beech, and the dark green threading between them is spruce and fir, which take over as you climb. The proportions shift with altitude and aspect, so the pattern on a hillside is effectively a map of its growing conditions.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
