The new house above the water garden

The Victorian house that made the old castle below redundant, built in the 1830s to a design by Anthony Salvin specifically so its windows would look down over the ruin and the water around it.
The garden itself, developed mainly from the 1970s onward with rhododendrons and azaleas planted for exactly this kind of framed view, is almost as much the point as either building. The stone for the house was quarried on the spot, and the quarry became the garden.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
