The Mezquita-Catedral

Roughly 850 double arches on reused Roman and Visigothic columns, red and white voussoirs stacked one arch on top of another. The double tier solved a real problem: the columns to hand were too short for the ceiling height wanted, so the builders added a second arch above the first to gain the rise.
Started in 785 as the great mosque of Umayyad Cordoba and expanded three times over two centuries, it became a cathedral after the Reconquista in 1236. A full Renaissance nave was later built directly into the middle of the hall, which from outside looks like nothing so much as a ship sailing through a forest of columns.
