The last light

Eleven in the morning, and this is as bright as the day got. Frozen ground, dead grass and black sand, with the low sun picking out the one thing standing above the plain.

The hill is a tuff cone, the remains of an eruption under ice or water, where the magma met the wet and shattered rather than flowing, building a steep pile of fragments instead of a smooth shield. The whole coast here is littered with them.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
