The Great Market Hall

Budapest's largest and oldest indoor market, opened in 1897 to move produce trading in off the street and under one enormous iron-and-glass roof. It is a late nineteenth-century type repeated across Europe, all serving the same idea: a city's food supply deserved proper civic architecture.
Zsolnay ceramic tile roofs it outside. Inside, three levels stack fresh produce below, stalls and eateries on the mezzanine, and a basement that still floods on occasion, since the hall sits close by the Danube.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
