The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

Twenty miles long, up to 1,200 feet deep, and geologically very young: the river has cut most of it since the last glaciation, in something like ten thousand years.
It could do that because the rock had already been rotted soft by hydrothermal alteration. Where the rock is unaltered the canyon narrows and steepens; where it is thoroughly cooked, the walls slump back into these pale ragged slopes.
