Venice sits on millions of timber piles driven into the lagoon mud, alder mostly, from the mainland forests. They have lasted a thousand years because they are permanently submerged: with no oxygen there is no rot, and over centuries the wood has slowly taken on minerals and hardened towards stone.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
