The Grand Canal at dusk
Venice · 26 August 2023

Two miles of it, reversing an S through the city, and it was a river channel before it was a street.
Every palazzo along it presents its best face to the water, because the water was the front. The land side of these buildings is generally plain to the point of apology. The entrance that mattered was the one you arrived at by boat, and the ground floor was for goods, not living. The mooring poles are pali, driven into the mud and painted to the owner's colours.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
