The cloister at Jerónimos

The Monastery of the Hieronymites, built from the wealth of the spice trade Vasco da Gama's voyages opened up, and paid for directly by a tax on that trade rather than the crown's general funds.
The carving is Manueline throughout - ropes, coral, armillary spheres, the whole vocabulary of a nation that had just discovered it could sail anywhere. Da Gama himself is buried inside, a few yards from the poet Camões, who wrote the epic about him.
