The canyon wall

The rock in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is rhyolite that has been cooked in place. Hot water circulating through it for a very long time broke the minerals down and oxidised the iron in them, which is where the yellows and rust reds come from. The canyon is essentially rusting, and the park is named for it.
That process also softens the rock, which is why the river has been able to cut this deep this fast. The lodgepole pines growing out of the face give the only sense of scale. They are full-sized trees.
