The Blue Pond
Biei, Hokkaido · 22 August 2024

Aoi Ike, formed by accident in the 1980s when a flood-control dam altered the groundwater feeding this stand of larch and birch and drowned it where it stood.
The colour is mineral, not paint or filter. Dissolved aluminium hydroxide from nearby Mount Tokachi scatters blue light the same way it does in some hot springs, and the dead trunks have simply never been cleared. Apple used a photograph of it as a wallpaper in 2012, which is most of why the car park is the size it is.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
Every photograph comes with notes on what it is.
