The Beguinage in spring

The Prinselijk Begijnhof in the second week of April, daffodils through the whole enclosure under poplars just coming into leaf. Nature rather than design times them to peak in the same fortnight each year.
It was founded in the thirteenth century as a walled community for beguines - laywomen who lived a religious life in common without taking permanent vows, and who were free to leave and marry if they chose. The last beguine here died in the late 1920s. Benedictine nuns took over the houses soon after and still live in them.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
