The garden framed by the doorway is doing the work, not the room. Tenryu-ji's pond garden was laid out by Muso Soseki in the 1300s and borrows the wooded hillside behind it into the composition - shakkei, "borrowed scenery" - so the temple's boundary effectively runs to the mountain, not to its wall.
The empty tatami room is the point rather than an absence. Nothing is meant to compete with the view.
