Temple of Olympian Zeus

Begun in the sixth century BC and not finished for roughly 640 years, until Hadrian completed it in AD 131 and put a statue of himself in beside the one of Zeus. Of 104 columns, fifteen are still standing.
The sixteenth is the row of drums lying in the grass. It came down in a storm in 1852 and has been left exactly where it fell, which explains the construction better than any of the standing columns do: stacked sections, centred on a wooden pin, no mortar anywhere.
