Taughannock Falls
Finger Lakes · 6 September 2020

At 215 feet, the tallest single-drop waterfall in the northeastern United States - taller than Niagara, though carrying a small fraction of the water.
The amphitheatre shape is the tell. The fall undercuts the shale at its base faster than it wears back the harder sandstone above, so the cliff is slowly eaten out from underneath and the whole gorge retreats upstream over time, leaving this bowl behind. The layering in the rock is a record of that retreat, one band at a time.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
