Tassel flower
Emilia sp.
Tassel Flower · Brooklyn Botanic Garden · 5 July 2025

Small tufted heads of red disc florets on wiry stems, with no ray petals at all - sometimes called Cupid's shaving brush for the shape.
An easy annual, native to the Old World tropics and grown in North American gardens mostly for how little it demands. It seeds itself around, and in the tropics it is a weed of every roadside.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
