The rock gone fully to silhouette, agave and prickly pear black against a sky still holding orange at the horizon - the last frame of a long evening chasing the same light across several overlooks. The agave is the plant to know: it grows for a decade or more, flowers once on a stalk that can top twenty feet, and dies, which is why the spent stalks stand about the desert like telegraph poles.
