Sunset over the Dolomites
Dolomites · 8 September 2025

Sun breaking low through cloud over ridge after ridge of peaks, a scatter of huts and parked cars marking a pass at the bottom of the frame, the meadows already turning autumn gold while the rock behind them stays bare in any season. The rock is what it looks like: the Dolomites are fossil coral reefs, grown in a tropical sea 250 million years ago and lifted three kilometres into the sky, and the pale colour is the dolomite mineral they are named for.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
