Southern Star
Tweedia caerulea
Southern Star · Brooklyn Botanic Garden · 5 August 2023

A genuinely blue flower, which is rarer in plants than it looks. Most garden blues are really violet or purple, and true blue has evolved independently only a handful of times.
It is a milkweed, from Argentina and Uruguay, and behaves like one: the little crown at the centre and the paired horn-shaped pods that follow the flowers are the family's signature. The petals fade towards purple as they age, so a plant carries several shades at once.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
