Shoes on the Danube Bank

Sixty pairs of iron shoes, cast to the fashions of the 1940s and fixed along the embankment at the water's edge. The memorial marks where Arrow Cross militia, in the winter of 1944 and into 1945, brought Jewish residents of the city, ordered them to remove their shoes - which had value, and could be sold - and shot them into the river.
The shoes are left empty on purpose. There is no plaque with names, because there could not be one. Most of those killed here were never identified.
