The tilted strata running down the ridge are the remains of a coral reef. In the Triassic this was a shallow tropical sea, and the Dolomites are what happened when the reefs were buried, chemically altered to dolomite rock, then lifted several thousand metres by the collision that built the Alps and cut into by ice.
The grass slope on the right and the sheer drop on the left are the same tilted beds seen from two sides: dip slope one way, cliff face the other.
