Sebka archway, the Alcazar

The diamond lattice on the right is sebka work, a rhomboid net of blind arcading carved in plaster and named after the salt flats of the same pattern. It has no structural role at all. It is ornament applied over a load-bearing wall, in the tradition inherited from Almohad Seville and Marrakesh.
Every surface here carries a different technique at once: plasterwork above, ceramic tile below, and a band of Arabic calligraphy running the join between them.
