Scree and spires

A basin of pale, broken limestone above the treeline, a footpath threading through it toward a pass. The scree is the mountain coming apart: water gets into the cracks, freezes, expands, and levers off a flake, and the piles at the foot of every cliff are the sum of those winters. Nothing grows on it because nothing can hold, and the paths across it move every year.
