The old castle, not the house. Scotney's Victorian owners built a new mansion on the hill above in the 1830s and then did something unusual: rather than pull the old moated house down, they left it half-ruined as the centrepiece of the garden they built around it, planting the quarry it stands beside with rhododendrons and azaleas to be seen from exactly this angle.
The round tower with the conical roof is fourteenth-century, part of a fortified house licensed to crenellate; the timber-framed gables behind it are Elizabethan. The moat is original and still spring-fed.
