Scotney Castle across the moat
Scotney Castle · 3 May 2026

A fourteenth-century moated manor, deliberately left as a ruin rather than restored once the Hussey family built a new house on the hill above it in the 1830s.
It is a textbook piece of Picturesque design, where an old building is kept specifically to be looked at rather than lived in. The round tower on the right is the one substantial survival of the original medieval castle; the timber-framed range beside it is a later, Tudor addition.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
