A Savannah Sparrow on last summer's teasel in an Upstate New York field in October, a sparrow of open grassland and fields across the whole continent, and one that is on its way south from the northern meadows to the coast.
A small yellow smudge just in front of the eye is the field mark that separates this from several other streaky brown sparrows sharing the same open-field habitat. Named for Savannah, Georgia, where the first specimen was taken, and not for any particular liking for savannahs.
